The Art of Creating “Blue Droplets”: From Inspiration to Kiln-Fired Magic

There’s something mesmerizing about the way water moves—how a single droplet can catch the light, ripple across a surface, and leave behind a sense of calm. “Blue Droplets” was inspired by quiet moments spent along Colorado’s rivers, watching sunlight dance across the current and noticing the endless shades of blue that appear with every shift in the sky.

Inspiration: Nature’s Palette

The idea for “Blue Droplets” began with a simple observation: the way water droplets form, reflect, and refract light. Whether it’s morning dew on wild grass or the shimmer of a river at dusk, these moments are fleeting but unforgettable. The goal was to capture that sense of movement and clarity in glass—something both delicate and enduring.

The Technical Process: Layer by Layer

Creating “Blue Droplets” starts with selecting a palette of glass in varying shades of blue, from deep cobalt to soft aqua. Each droplet is hand-cut and shaped, then carefully arranged on a base layer. Powders and frit are added to create subtle gradients and depth, echoing the complexity of water itself.

Once the composition is set, the piece enters the kiln for its first firing. The heat fuses the layers together, smoothing edges and intensifying the colors. Sometimes, a second or even third firing is needed to achieve the perfect balance of gloss and translucency. The process is part science, part intuition—each firing brings surprises, and no two droplets are ever exactly alike.

Artistic Reflection: Embracing the Unexpected

One of the joys of working with fused glass is the element of surprise. The kiln transforms the raw materials in ways that can’t always be predicted. Sometimes the blues blend in unexpected ways, or a tiny bubble forms, adding character and dimension. These “happy accidents” are what make each “Blue Droplets” piece truly one-of-a-kind.

Bringing It Home: Art That Lasts

Durability is always top of mind. Each droplet is designed to withstand the elements, making it perfect for both indoor and outdoor display. Whether catching sunlight in a window or adding a splash of color to a garden, “Blue Droplets” is meant to bring a sense of wonder and tranquility to any space.

Let's talk about the Magic of Glass

There’s a certain magic in transforming raw materials into something both beautiful and functional. In the studio, technical mastery is at the heart of every piece—whether it’s kiln-firing layers of glass to capture the movement of water, or engineering a clever solution like a handmade mousetrap for the workspace.

Glass art begins with careful observation and planning. Each piece is built up through multiple firings, with temperatures precisely controlled to fuse colors and textures without sacrificing strength. The process demands patience: from cutting and layering the glass, to monitoring the kiln as it cycles through hours of heat and gradual cooling. Stainless steel frameworks are welded by hand, ensuring that every sculpture or panel is as durable as it is luminous.

That same inventive approach extends beyond the artwork. Sometimes, the studio calls for practical solutions—like designing a custom mousetrap to keep the creative space in harmony. It’s a reminder that artistry isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about problem-solving, experimentation, and a willingness to get hands-on with every challenge.

Whether crafting a vibrant orb or a simple tool for the studio, the process is rooted in curiosity and technical skill. Each creation—artwork or mousetrap—reflects a commitment to quality, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of making.

"Twisted Tree": A turn with nature

Nature has a way of teaching us resilience, and the "Twisted Tree" sculpture embodies this lesson beautifully. Standing at an impressive 12 feet tall, this piece is a striking blend of mild steel, powder coat, fused glass, and solar lights, creating a visual narrative that speaks to both the challenges of life and the beauty of the natural world.

The twisted tree is not just a sculpture; it’s a metaphor for the journey we all navigate. Much like a tree that has endured harsh weather, bending and twisting over time, this artwork reflects the setbacks and triumphs that shape our lives. The spiral trunk serves as a reminder that resilience can emerge from adversity, a theme that resonates deeply in today’s world.

The interplay of glass and steel in this piece also highlights pressing environmental issues, particularly the challenges of climate change affecting water resources in the West. The vibrant colors of the fused glass evoke the beauty of nature while simultaneously advocating for its preservation. This duality invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with the environment and the importance of sustainability.

Creating "Twisted Tree" involved a meticulous process, including multiple kiln firings to achieve the perfect fusion of glass. Each layer tells a story, capturing the essence of the Western American landscape and its ever-changing climate. The integration of solar lights adds a magical touch, illuminating the piece at night and inviting contemplation.

Art is not merely decoration; it’s a conversation starter, a way to connect with our surroundings and each other. This sculpture stands as a testament to the power of creativity and the stories that art can tell.

For those interested in bringing a piece of this narrative into their own space, "Twisted Tree" is available for viewing and purchase. It’s more than just a sculpture; it’s an opportunity to support an artist’s journey and to engage with the themes of nature and resilience.

Ocotillo Bone Marrow Nearing Completion

In the heart of the desert, where the sun kisses the earth and the wind whispers through the canyons, a new sculpture emerges—"Ocotillo Bone Marrow." This striking piece stands over 10 feet tall, a testament to the beauty and resilience of the Ocotillo cactus, a symbol of life in arid landscapes.

Crafted from mild steel, this sculpture is not just a visual marvel; it’s a dynamic experience. The two figures, mirroring each other, invite viewers to engage with their surroundings. As one walks around the piece, it unfolds like the gentle sway of grass in the breeze, revealing layers of intricate design and craftsmanship.

The interior and exterior of the sculpture are transformed through the addition of fused glass orbs, each one a vibrant splash of color reminiscent of growth and water—elements so vital to life in the West. These orbs, with their oozing hues, create a dialogue between the steel and glass, merging the organic with the industrial.

The base plate is meticulously designed to allow the figures to quiver, responding to the slightest touch or movement in the environment. This kinetic aspect adds a layer of interactivity, inviting viewers to not just observe but to participate in the artwork’s life.

Art is a reflection of the world around us, and "Ocotillo Bone Marrow" embodies the delicate balance of nature and human creativity. It serves as a reminder of the importance of water conservation and environmental consciousness, themes that resonate deeply in the Western American landscape.

This sculpture is more than just a piece of art; it’s a story waiting to be told. It invites you to explore, to reflect, and to connect with the natural world.

Bone Marrow

Starting a new work. It’s tied to the idea of water and its source of life. Single drops hold promise of another day and abundance. I am drawing on the images of High Plains desert seasoned stalks of plant fauna. As I build the work in steel, it reminds me of my own will to flourish. The bone marrow deep within supports vitality and life.

This is the steel structure being cleaned from the welding process. The joints are awkward because they have been twisted from the wind and stunted from drought conditions. The circular shapes will have glass orbs resembling the abortion of water droplets. There are a two forms that will intertwine.

More images to come!

A Day’s Work

Enjoying the restoration project of Robert Mangold’s two sculptures.

“Tetrahydral Hydroshere Airplane” is a wonderfully aged mild steel piece. The design and fabrication of this piece is one of a genius’ mind. The upper portion is delicately balanced on one point and is perfectly level. The mastery of balance, kinetic and environment makes this sculpture exquisite. I only wish I had the budget to purchase the sculpture for my small and modest collection.

“Anemotive Tower: Windsong” is another unique sculpture created by the late sculptor. It is an early piece estimated to be first exhibited in the late 1970s. It has a single axis. In my tenure working with Mr. Mangold, the sculpture came into the studio for restoration sometime around 2010 (my memory is not perfect). The bearing and paint were completely redone. Today as it is in my studio for restoration, it got some new bearings. The paint is such a high-quality it only needed a thorough wash and wax. That says a LOT about the technique and talent of Robert Mangold to create sculpture that stands the test of time AND Colorado’s harsh weather conditions.

Twisted Tree

Inspired by a tree I found recently when I was skiing at Arapahoe Basin. The tree looked like a candy cane by the way it had been twisted. I did some research and discovered it is a true phenomenon for a tree to be twisted. It takes a lifetime of harsh winds and weather for it to occur.

I was inspired to start my own piece. It feels autobiographical. This is the beginning.

First Sign of Spring II

I so very pleased to announce the installation of a commission at a private home in Greenwood Village. “First Sign of Spring II” is smaller than the original one and has a different set of colors.

The sculpture located in an intimate garden setting surrounded by large Spruce trees. As the sun passes through the day, little slivers of light pass through the glass forms and shine brightly. Bright enough you would think I installed electricity. The glass creates refractions as it passes through the many molded surfaces and colors.

Enjoy the images! I expect to continue building artwork along this series. It is immensely rewarding to consider natural light as a sculptural medium.

Raspberry Floricane in Salida, Colorado

 “Raspberry Floricane”

I started growing raspberry bushes in my garden a couple of years ago. Read all the instructions of how to plant, place and care for the new shoots. I choose a location that was on my irrigation line, sunny but sheltered from winter winds. My chickens nap behind them in between the canes and the picket fence. They make holes in the soft dirt to dust bathe.

I was walking through the canes, examining their progress when I noticed a cane had fallen to the ground and appeared to be buried. My immediate reaction was to pull the cane out of the ground and weave it back into the trellis. What I extracted was a thick bulbous end with tiny knobs randomly poking out. What an interesting shape!

I again looked up the details of growing raspberries. The awkward strange form is called a “Floricane”. I decided it would make a fantastic sculpture.

The sculpture was purchased by a private collector in Salida, Colorado. It was installed in the beautifully landscaped backyard and outdoor living area. I always start to miss these creatures once they leave the studio. I wish I could negotiate “visitation” rights when the art goes to a private residence.

Shoutout! Champoeg State Heritage Park

Last night, Robert and I stayed at Champoeg State Heritage Park. What a great treat to meet the nicest camper neighbors.

A few politely asked what exactly is in the bed of my truck. One gal asked if we were “storm chasers”. Another happy camper who traveled from Washington for a large family reunion got to see its evening lights.

Here you go camper friends… the strange object got installed at City Hall of Lake Oswego today.

Many thanks to the Arts Council of Lake Oswego and the Gallery Without Walls. Mike and Nash did a knock-up job to help install the sculpture.
