Meet "Century Gift"

"Century Gift" was created as a meditation on endurance, transformation, and the quiet healing that can happen through sustained making. The work grows out of long hours in the studio, where repeated acts of welding, shaping, and refining become their own kind of rhythm—something timeless, grounding, and restorative.

A Century plant offers in a final act one single bloom and then parrishes shortly thereafter.
Currently, the sculpture is on display in Downtown Palisade, CO through Fall 2027

I wanted the sculpture to carry both strength and openness, so it could speak to the way art can hold feeling, process experience, and offer a sense of calm in shared public space. My work is rooted in the belief that what we create over time becomes a form of good medicine: for the maker, for the viewer, and for the community that lives with it.

"Century Gift" reflects that belief through its material presence and its invitation to pause, look closely, and feel something steady and human. In that way, the sculpture is both a gift of time and a record of healing through creation. The century plant, or agave, carries a deep history rooted in arid land, endurance, and human relationship. Native to Mexico and the American Southwest, it has long been valued for fiber, food, and ceremonial use, while its remarkable life cycle has made it a lasting symbol of resilience, transformation, and release.

What makes the century plant so unforgettable is its singular bloom. After years— sometimes decades—of quietly gathering strength in its broad, fleshy leaves and central core, it finally sends up a towering flower stalk, rising dramatically toward the sky. And then, after this one extraordinary act, the parent plant completes its life. In that final bloom, the agave becomes a powerful reminder that growth is often slow, and that beauty can arrive at the very end, when everything has been gathered into one brilliant expression.

Let's talk about the Magic of Glass

There’s a certain magic in transforming raw materials into something both beautiful and functional. In the studio, technical mastery is at the heart of every piece—whether it’s kiln-firing layers of glass to capture the movement of water, or engineering a clever solution like a handmade mousetrap for the workspace.

Glass art begins with careful observation and planning. Each piece is built up through multiple firings, with temperatures precisely controlled to fuse colors and textures without sacrificing strength. The process demands patience: from cutting and layering the glass, to monitoring the kiln as it cycles through hours of heat and gradual cooling. Stainless steel frameworks are welded by hand, ensuring that every sculpture or panel is as durable as it is luminous.

That same inventive approach extends beyond the artwork. Sometimes, the studio calls for practical solutions—like designing a custom mousetrap to keep the creative space in harmony. It’s a reminder that artistry isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about problem-solving, experimentation, and a willingness to get hands-on with every challenge.

Whether crafting a vibrant orb or a simple tool for the studio, the process is rooted in curiosity and technical skill. Each creation—artwork or mousetrap—reflects a commitment to quality, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of making.
