"Blue Butterfly Swarm" in Lyons, Colorado

"Blue Butterfly Swarm"
Town Hall
Lyon, Colorado

Hello!  I am Reven Marie Swanson, a sculptor from Denver, Colorado.  My studio is located in Park Hill.  I am most happy to bring to Lyon's Town Hall a special sculpture, "Blue Butterfly Ball".

It's with earnest that I share the beauty of our Colorado Native Species in a collective form.  They represent a community of sharing and a common bond to thrive.  Collectively, they are stronger, working together and apart.  I believe there are many analogies to be drawn from their behaviors and our experiences navigating our modern culture.

Artist's Statement:

Human life on Earth exists in a fragile balance between beginnings and endings—a cord that Mother Nature can tighten or release without warning. Blue Butterfly Swarm reflects this delicate equilibrium, exploring the tension between modern technology and the organic rhythms of the natural world.
Butterflies, long seen as symbols of transformation and vulnerability, are gathered here in motion, inviting viewers to pause and consider how human activity affects even the most intricate ecosystems.
By immersing the viewer in a swirl of luminous wings, the sculpture encourages a quiet rethinking of our choices and a renewed respect for the delicate balance that sustains all living beings. At its heart, Blue Butterfly Swarm is a call for stewardship, urging us to protect and preserve the natural world we depend on.

Full description:

A 30-inch orb of welded stainless-steel butterfly forms hangs from twin curved stems and transitions from daylight shimmer to a slow, color-changing solar glow at dusk. Hand-assembled glass mosaic in blues and orange, random polish, and a light translucent powder coat combine for durable outdoor presence.

Blue Butterfly Swarm presents an engineered conversation between modern fabrication and native life. The free-moving butterfly ball measures 30 inches in diameter and is built from 100+ machine-cut, welded stainless-steel butterfly silhouettes that reference Colorado native species while forming a cohesive spherical structure.

An interior glass mosaic in blue and orange adds depth and refracted color by day; random polish and a light translucent powder coat introduce subtle surface variation without overwhelming reflectivity. Integrated solar lighting begins at dusk and cycles through color changes with a slow, breathing rhythm; the light provides atmospheric illumination without broadcasting beyond the work.

Construction details emphasize longevity and craft: machine cutting for precise forms, careful welding to secure the orb, and a welded stainless-steel support anchored to a base plate for outdoor installation. Conceptually, the piece encourages reflection on technological impact and ecological balance through familiar natural imagery and deliberate material choices.

A one-of-a-kind outdoor sculpture suited to gardens, plazas, or entryways and a thoughtful addition to a private or public collection.
